Monster of the Week #1: Final Mystery and how it broke down

{Join me on the journey through a game falling apart. This happens. Final sessions get skipped and the world keeps turning. First you should understand the context. This wasn't the first adventure for the game. We played through a few others and they were solving cases left and right. The first part of the mystery went really well. Then things sorta went pear-shaped and it fell apart toward the end. Here is the first part of the write up.}

Martin Moon and Jack Wesson had just pulled out of the last town after resolving the issues with the cult and the Tulpa, no closer to understanding either, but humanity is safe for now.

Jack was contacted by a hacker friend he knows through the forums of weirdness he frequents named Stealth Override. He clued him in to a town where the last member of one of the town-founder's bloodline had died (JH Tobin). Not long after that children started going missing. The local wildlife was acting strange and all seemed to be migrating away from the town. Several children became ill and died of a mysterious disease (4 children total: 2 orphans living in the orphanage, 1 recently adopted child, and the child of the adopted parents). There were even some reports of children running away from home.

Upon arriving at town, Martin set out to find the bodies of the recently deceased children to see if he could gather any clues about what was going on in town. He set off to the funeral home where they bodies were being kept. Luckily he still had a badge and ID he'd lifted from the cops that had questioned him and Jack while they were dealing with the Tulpa. He got in to see the corpses. The children's eyes became a solid milky emerald color, their veins were reaching the surface of their skin and curling in strange patterns.

Meanwhile Jack went straight to the Tobin manor. The site where an ancient bloodline finally ended was bound to have some sort of powerful weirdness he could poke with a stick. Arriving at the abandoned manor he climbed some scaffolding on the exterior, entering in through the attic. He observed signs of someone going through the things in the attic recently. He caught someone staring at him from the trap door into the attic, but they disappeared the moment he turned to look. He immediately took off chasing after this being further into the house. Before long he'd become lost in the twisting corridors all lit by torchlight. He believed he'd cornered the creature, only to discover that he'd been chasing a phantom that disappeared in a dead end.

He opened his eyes to the spirit site and saw dozens of swirling energy sources flying throughout the manor, there was one place near the first floor in the center of the house where the spirit energy seemed to be trying to get to but was unable to. Snapping back to reality an unearthly voice whispered in his ears: "You'll never find your way out." Jack took off running as fast as he could toward stairs down at the end of the hallway. He'd misjudged the strength of the banister hoping to use it to help him change directions to go down the stairs. Instead he smashed through the stairs and tumbled down to the third floor and into a darkened hallway.

Jack began heading down the hallway slowly observing the suits of armor and artwork along the walls. He came upon an empty pedestal that suddenly had a hooded figure standing there. The figure swung a large sword at Jack, who managed to step back, but the blade caught him on the understand of his arm, cutting through muscle and arteries. Jack ran as he felt the feeling leave his fingers and could feel the wet blood running down his arm.

Jack took off back towards the staircase he'd come down. His phone rang from Martin calling as he was running, he struggled to answer: "FUCK It's gonna kill me. HELP!" as he ran into the sunlit stairwell and turned to face the approaching opponent Jack saw the figure step into the sun briefly then disappear fading back into the darkness of the hallway. "It just vaporized in front of me. Get to Tobin Manor." then hung up and hunkered down to keep safely in the sunlight. The hours passed and he continued to bleed too much as the sunset he could just make out something approaching from the hallway in the darkness. As he readied his weapon, he said "Where the fuck is Moonie when I need him??"

Meanwhile, Martin left the funeral home immediately charging towards Tobin Manor. Wasting no time, he headed in through the front door. Being plunged into a darkened and strange grand entrance. A staircase lead up to a landing with a hallway that headed further into the house, and two staircases going off in either direction to the second floor. From all around him in the darkness, Martin begin to hear giggling and laughing from strange voices. He didn't waste time trying to figure out what it was and ran immediately up the stairs to the second floor. He could hear the creatures coming after him, so he charged into a dark hallway leading to the stairs up. The pursuing creatures stopped abruptly and made noises of surprise at the direction Martin went. They all began laughing harder and slammed the door he'd gone through.

Surrounded by pitch blackness, he used his cellphone light to find his way. The sound of heavy labored breathing was surrounding him and it felt like the darkness closed in on his light. At the top of the stairs Martin saw the bright light of a doorway leading into the sunlight, upon approach a shadow moved in front of the doorway, blurring the light and revealing a hazy figure armed with a weapon. Martin drew his shotgun and began to approach ready to unload his shotgun on whatever was waiting for him on the other side of the doorway.
