Monster of the Week #3: We're still here? Why?

{The last adventure saw them returning to town. Trying to harass the coroner for answers he didn't have. Finally checking the hall of records, where they had a confrontation with the records keeper. The record keeper apologized and offered to help, but the players were instantly overwhelmingly suspicious of the person and refused to have a conversation with him other than to bark out "INVESTIGATE A MYSTERY WHAT DOES HE KNOW" instead of just asking or having a conversation, they fell back onto the basic moves and tried to shoehorn them into the total lack of conversation. They wouldn't even accept tea when he offered. Philistines.}

After the pair parked their blood soaked VW bug behind their RV, the decided it'd be wise to wait until dawn before trying to do anything with the Fae that seem to be active at night. Martin told Jack about how he used to charge into places head strong and foolish and how it nearly killed him. It's unwise for hunters to go it alone.

At dawn they headed for Donny's diner. Martin did his best to cover the interior of the VW bug with some quilts from his camper. Everything seemed fine, but without realizing it Martin had shifted the quilts as he got out of the car at the diner. They ordered up some Grand sized Slam breakfasts and discussed the facts of the case. It didn't take long for the VW bug with out of state plates and a blood spatter interior to draw the attention of the nosy locals, who called the Sheriff.

Martin used his telepathy to convince the Sheriff that the car wasn't even theirs and he was mistaken. The Sheriff fell for it and instead had the car towed until an owner could be located. After the cops left, Jack and Martin decided to try to get a ride from a waitress that was getting off work. Martin approached her trying to use his telepathy to manipulate her into giving them a ride, but succeeded only in giving her a creepy eyed stare; which she responded to with mace and retreating back into the diner.

Jack noticed them lock the door and grab their phone. He sucker punched Martin to get him to stop struggling, then carried him to the back of the restaurant and they hid in a dumpster. The Sheriff arrived, but the pair managed to remain hidden without Martin giving into the pain of his pepper sprayed eyes.

They called a cab and it arrived driven by Frank Nagheenanajar, a native to South Carolina that puts on a lot of south eastern Asian decorations inside his cab for the atmosphere "The hicks in this town love this kind of shit. Taking a cab is an 'experience' for them." Frank drove them to the hospital to help stitch up Jack's wound from the fight he'd had with the Fae at Tobin Manor.

The staff at the hospital bought the story that jack gave them about falling down a flight of stairs (which was technically true, but just not what made the wound). It took them most of the day to get him stitched up though. When he found Martin, he had spent the past 8 hours in the cab with Frank getting stoned out of his mind and wiping away all memories he had of the Tobin Manor over the past two days in town and despite their research into the blueprints of the building.

They went to Tobin Manor, determined to go to Tobin's library in the center of the house. As they discussed getting in through the second floor instead of the main entrance to avoid whatever they had run into last time. Martin said: "okay I'm still having trouble picturing where this hallway is that's off the main entrance room that I went through last time I was here and saw on the map at the records hall, where is this library?"

Jack's jaw dropped and he was confused since every single time since they started to investigate this mystery this entrance hall has come up, so after spending a long time elaborating on where they believed the hallway that leads to the study to be and making sure that Martin had it clear in his head, Martin says: "Why are you describing the entrance hall and staircase to me? I just want to go to the library."

Through the magic of a complete lack of self awareness, they found themselves at the end of the hallway. Before them was an area that was filled with statues that had beams of sunlight reflected from various mirrors illuminating the statues. In the center of the statues garden was a green house giving off a faint warm glow. They passed the statues and entered the green house. On the inside it was an ornate study that appears large than the exterior would make it seem. The walls didn't appear to be glass, but were made of dark wood bookshelves. They'd found Tobin's library.

They quickly moved through to find what information they could. Martin checked that the seal was still solid and nothing had harmed it. In the process he learned what he could about the process of creating the seal, because if this one was still solid there must be a second portal. Jack searched the library for information about his infection and was able to locate a cure and information about the infections cycle. He would need a relatively rare type of orchid, there were references to the orchid growing in the statue garden, but from what they had passed through it looked like there wasn't much left alive out there.

The two moved on to find any research Tobin had done about the possible location of a second portal. They were able to locate blueprints for a building in town, but the name had long since been removed from the blueprint. They began to leave, but as Jack opened the door he could feel the gaze from unseen forces. He began to hear whispers in a language that brought a flood of memories from his childhood back. He had whispers like this in the nightmares that had sent him to the mental institution. He felt that same fear boiling up in the back of his throat. He remembered the only place he felt safe after hearing those whispers was surrounded by as much light as possible.

Martin recalled a time he'd dealt with similar beings from another nocturnal plane. There was a spell of holy light that was used during the Crusades that help not only light the way, but kept dark forces at bay. Martin quickly fashioned a crucifix and used a letter opener to puncture his palms and smeared it on the cross to activate the blood magic spell. They used the brilliantly bright light to shelter them as they scrambled out of Tobin Manor to their RV to make their next move in tracking down this second portal and finally putting the mystery of Tobin Manor behind them.

{My saltiness came through in this game session too. Things were going along really well, until a player spaced the description of the entrance hall for the 3rd time and then forgot why they had asked to have it explained again. This particular session had me questioning whether or not I'd be interested in continuing to run games for the group and generally feeling like after a dozen or so sessions there are some basic things I shouldn't have to go over. That's my fault for making assumptions though}
