CASE #1:

An Old Friend, a New Home, and Unwanted Guests

Case History
_______________________________________________________

It's late summer in the Northeast United States. I've come to an old home at the request of an old colleague that believes there may be supernatural events occurring here. I've set up my detection equipment all over the house. Jack and I are camping out in the downstairs living room tonight. If anything moves around in this house that shouldn't be here, our equipment will find it.

Jack and I are heading out to the new home of Reggie and Anne Johnson. Anne iss an old college of mine from my days doing research at the college. She contacted me after moving into a home they inherited from a relative that died suddenly.

Anne says that spooky stuff has been happening. Boxes unpacking themselves, things going missing, boxes being moved from room to room. Reggie dismisses all of this as exhaustion.

The facts so far:

  • The Johnson family have two kids.
  • Reggie's brother Greg and friend Bill are helping with the move.
  • The kids say they see things at night, parents can't confirm
  • The house is very cluttered and they are still moving in
  • Anne is more intrigued by the possibility of the supernatural than she is worried.
  • Anne was not close with the Uncle that left the home to her.
  • No one was clear on the exact circumstances of his death.
  • The "occurrences" only happens at night.

Initial Investigation:

"You're just not remembering where you packed things. You're exhausted from the move and forgot where you left everything. I promise once we are unpacked the house will feel more like home," Reggie said interrupting Anne's story every time she started explaining one of the "occurrences" they'd experienced.

Anne waived her hand in dismissal of Reggie's explanations.

I wasted no time and agreed to take up the case. However, he insisted that the family leave the house while he performed his inspections and tests to locate the disturbance.

Reggie was not pleased by this, but after some words with Anne in the other room he reluctantly agreed to have Anne take the kids and go to a nearby hotel for the weekend.

"Besides it'll be nice to get away from Greg and those ten ton boots he's been stomping around in," Anne said playfully as they resolved the final details of her and the kid's departure.

Reggie refused to give Jack and I any peace to set up their equipment.

"I've seen shows about people like you. You may have fooled Anne, but I'm not so naive. If you even think of trying to trick us in any way I will not hesitate to call the police," Reggie said as he cornered mein the afternoon.

Second day:

after reviewing the night's recordings and finding nothing, Jack and I sat down to breakfast with a visibly distraught Reggie. He looked as though he had not slept the entire night through.

In a quiet voice, peaking over his shoulder to make sure Greg and Bill had already left to get back to unpacking the truck, "I saw something last night. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and from the upstairs bathroom window I saw...things all around the house. There were dozens of them, surrounding the house. They looked like shadows of people, but they were the wrong shape, as though they had been stretched unevenly and grotesquely. They were all shadow except for two glowing yellow eyes where a face should have been."

"And you are sure they are outside of the house?"

"Yeah, like they were waiting for something to signal them to approach the house."

Investigator's Note:

Based on Reggie's description of the beings he saw, I looked them up in my library of occult books. There does not seem to be any clear mentions of the beings. There are many references to shadow beings around the time of the fall, or rise, of a great evil power. None of the descriptions are complete or offer any confirmed details. It's almost as if those that witnessed the beings were silenced before they were able to retell their stories.

Second night

Decided to set up the observation area upstairs tonight. Hoping to catch a glimpse of the shadow beings that Reggie suggested. We took over the spare room upstairs and sent Greg and Bill down to the living room for the night.

Shortly after 2am, there was a loud crash from the living room. Jack took it upon himself to investigate the noise. I stayed with Reggie to continue to monitor our equipment.

Jack tripped on his way down the stairs trying to sneak. Though he fell, he was able to catch himself without making too much noise. At the bottom of the stairs he noticed a red glow emanating from a large hole in the double doors that lead to the living room.

As Jack got himself onto his feet again, an object came flying through the opening and landed in front of him with a heavy thud. It was one of Greg's boots with a foot and part of his shin bone still inside.

"Noooooooooooope," Jack flew back up the stairs and slammed the bedroom door behind him.

"What's wrong why are you back up here?"

"Saw a boot, with a foot in it, pretty sure it was Greg's. Wasn't gonna stick around to find out who tore the foot off," Jack said with his back against the door.

When Reggie heard about the foot he began to panic and threw Jack out of the way of the door. Sending him tumbling to the floor. I was able to restrain him despite his adrenaline rush.

"Stay here, we can't have you going out there and having whatever got Greg get you. Think of Anne and the kids," that seemed to calm Reggie down enough that the struggle drained out of him.

"What the hell is this?" Jack said looking up from a broken floor board holding a tattered notebook.

"This was Anne's Uncle's study. Must be something of his," Reggie said

Upon a closer look it appears to be a hand written account by Anne's Uncle about his efforts to keep the house safe. He had been living here his whole life protecting an entombed object that was the very essence of evil. Recently the stone sarcophagus that had been containing the evil energy had cracked open. The journal entries stop shortly before he mentions making an attempt to seal the object back into the container.

"Sounds like whatever the hell is in the basement must be causing this. Let's get down there and take care of this ASAP," Jack said.

Without further discussion, Jack rushed the door, threw it open, jumped off the upstairs landing, grabbed the chandelier, lost his grip, and smashed through the basement door with a loud and painful sounding crash.

I looked at Reggie and shrugged his shoulder as he shook his head. The two of them managed to get down the stairs and through the basement door without disturbing whatever was in the living room.

At the bottom of the stairs, I helped Jack up while ahead of them was a long hallway with several doors leading off of it.

"The basement never had hallways. It didn't have hallways yesterday," Reggie was muttering to himself as he pressed his back to the wall.

I quickly got out my flashlight. The beam of light was able to pierce through the illusion of the hallways. We could see straight through the walls to the door leading to the laundry room. A quick scan of the basement made it clear that is the only door that is real.

I inspected the walls around the light. They were solid. Where the light hit the wall could be passed through as if it was wide open.

The pounding sounds of the spirit upstairs in the living room raging through the house grew louder, I spoke with Reggie, "You should stay here. You can guard our backs and you'll be able to avoid getting caught up in whatever we find."

"You're out of your god damned mind if you think I'm staying alone here."

"Well we need someone to hold the flashlight so we can get to the laundry room. Take my obsidian blade. It can pierce spirit flesh. Anything tries to get at you, just drive the point of this through it and whatever it is will be banished from our plane of existence," I wasn't sure how much if any of what I was telling Reggie was true, but he seemed to relax as he gripped the blade and nodded.

In the laundry room, the only light was the moonlight pouring in through a small window. Jack took a look outside, "Those shadow things are right outside."

I used a quick and dirty spell I knew to help grant me some site. I spit into my hand, poured a small amount of juju powder into the spit and made a paste. Then applying it to my eyes I was able to see the evil spirit energy pouring through a cracked open stone chest that was hidden behind a false wall in the laundry room.

Neither of us noticed the laundry strewn around the floor start to move. It was jack slashing out wildly with the chain blade and tearing through the fabric that brought me back to reality.

"Uh...Marty? Aside from the laundry uh...waking up. The shadow beings are at the window. They look like they intend to come in," Jack said between slashes at the laundry as it tried to wrap itself around him.

"Shit, Jack, you need to get through that wall and close the leaking energy. These things are coming for them. I'll hold them back long enough for you as long as I can. Work quickly and we'll get out of here alive," I shoved Jack toward the wall and became an incantation of protection.

Before I could finish the incantation the basement window exploded inward and the shadow beings being to pour in. The distraction caused a momentary loss of concentration weakened the spell.

As the energy buzzed up to form a wall in front of me, the shadow beings being attacking the wall. I could see the energy flexing against their blows.

"Jack this won't last, you better hurry up back there."

Jack for his part moved quickly. Breaking through the false wall and entering the hidden room. At the center was a stone chest that was cracked open, with a smokey black fire spewing from the crack. He dropped to his knees before the chest and wrapped the chain of his weapon around the chest. He pulled with all his strength as he chanted to sealing spell.

Just as my wall of protection failed and the shadow beings surrounded me, a flash of blinding light and the sound of thunder crashed through the entire house. By the time the light had cleared from my vision the shadow beings were gone.

Final Thoughts:

We helped Reggie clean up the house. We couldn't find any sign of Greg or Bill in the house. Not so much as a bloodstain or luggage. It was as if something had consumed them entirely, essence and all. Jack and I left the day Anna and the kids returned. Reggie assured us he understood the home needed to be protected and he could be the one to do it. He never mentioned his new life's work to Anna.

Jack and I will need to look into these shadow beings more. Why were they there? Did they cause the crack? Was it the rage spirit? What happened to them after the crack was sealed? I'm beginning to think we have barely scratched the surface of the true mystery here.
